Dragon Boats
I love the idea of this dish in a restaurant. I am invariably disappointed though, because although the meat component is delicious, the lettuce is usually either tasteless, typical ceasar quality romaine lettuce, or brownish, limp iceberg. Uggg!
However, as soon as that garden lettuce comes up, and the days are getting warm, and I hardly feel like cooking, let alone eating, I whip up a big batch of dragon boats. The flavor is a perfect combination of sweet, sour and tangy. The family loves these, because they can customize their own, and, let's be honest, what boy won't love a meal with the word dragon in it!
1 lb hamburger 1 tbsp nasi goreng (this is basically teriyaki spice) Fry hamburger and break into very small pieces. Add all the spices. Fry til browned.
To this add: 2 carrots, shredded 1 onion, cubed 2 tbsp celery, chopped small 1 red and green pepper, sliced
Stir into hamburger and let cook while you make the sauce.
Whisk together 1/2 c soy sauce 1/2 c sugar 2 tbsp brown sugar 3 tbsp white vinegar
2 tbsp Hoisin sauce (you can skip this) 3 tbsp honey garlic balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp teriyaki dry glaze (you can skip this as well)
Pour over meat mixture and let simmer until sauce is almost gone and meat is well coated. Serve in lettuce, wrapping like a taco. You can also serve it with some rice, which is a hubby pleaser (Richard always needs a starch with his meal!).
